CALLS are being made for a greater police presence in an East Yorkshire town after an alleged assault.
Humberside Police are investigating the claims someone was attacked in the Tesco car park in Goole.
A section of the car park, close to Boothferry Road, was cordoned off by police officers for most of Sunday as forensic teams looked for evidence.
East Riding and Goole Town Councillor Keith Moore said: "For a long time now we have been hearing reports about how safe Humberside is and how crime rates are falling.
"This just goes to show and prove that you cannot drop your guard while you are out.
"At the same time the Government cannot reduce frontline police officers.
"We need more officers on the street, not less.
"You can go out in Goole town centre and walk around for a couple of hours without seeing a police officer. This issue needs serious attention."
Cllr Moore also believes more police patrols are needed close to the Tesco car park area.
He said: "For a long time the car park has been renowned for boy racers and youths congregating there.
"Something really needs to be done."
Rumours were rife on Facebook and Twitter at the weekend that two bodies had been discovered following the launch of the police investigation.
Goole MP Andrew Percy said he is concerned about how quickly rumours about the town have been circulating on social media sites.
He said: "I think social media is a fantastic thing but it can also enable things to get out of hand very quickly.
"People clearly need to take what they read and hear on sites such as Twitter and Facebook with a pinch of salt.
"Social media sites are a great medium for news but they do have their limitations.
"You cannot replace proper facts with a random tweet."
Shoppers continued with their daily tasks at the supermarket yesterday.
One woman said: "It's very scary to think that something like this can happen right here in a supermarket car park where you go on a daily basis.
"You take your children here as well, it's sickening.
"I don't know what Goole is coming to these days."
A Humberside Police spokesman said: "Police received a call at 1.13am on Sunday, August 25, about an alleged assault in the Jackson Street area of the Tesco car park.
"Police attended and cordoned off the area to preserve the evidence and enable investigations to take place.
"We can clarify following speculation that was widely circulating on social media that no bodies have been found on the site.
"The investigation is continuing and anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting log 49, of August 25."
