VOLUNTEERS from across Kingswood stepped out in force in a bid to clean up the estate.

They were joined by Hull North MP Diana Johnson and former Lord Mayor of Hull Councillor Danny Brown to complete a litter pick.

Cllr Brown hailed the clean-up operation a success after a total of 25 bags of rubbish were collected, and praised the young volunteers who took part.

"The kids who took part were really into it and they were really responsible," he said.

"They actually enjoyed it, which was the best bit."

Although the pick was successful, Cllr Brown admits litter is still a big problem in the area and is hoping more people will do their bit to keep Kingswood clean and tidy.

"You can walk anywhere in the city and see litter, it's everywhere," he said.

"If there were no litter bins people could complain, but there are.

"Some people are drinking on the streets late into the night which is maybe one reason why there are so many empty beer cans around.

"There are quite a sufficient number of bins in the area, but people can't be bothered to walk an extra 100 yards."

The litter pick took place along the Asda spine path, which runs from Hemble Way to Blackwater Way.

Businesses on the estate have also got on board to help crack down on littering and antisocial behaviour.

Chris Craven, Hull City Council's neighbourhood co-ordinator, said reducing litter in Kingswood is one of the authority's priorities.

"Litter picks are just one of the ways we are trying to tackle the problem," he said.

"Our enforcement team regularly monitor the area and will issue fixed penalty fines to those who drop litter and do not dispose of it in a responsible way."

The volunteers, including members from the Guides, donned high-visibility vests, gloves and litter sticks provided by Asda.

The pick was part of the supermarket's ongoing campaign to help communities clean up their areas.

Deputy manager, Adam O'Neill, said: "We have colleagues who give up their time regularly to support the cause.

"Litter in the surrounding streets affects the presentation of the area. We are trying to enhance the local community."
