E YORKS: Tesco has backed down and apologised over parking changes at its Beverley store.

The supermarket giant wanted to reduce free parking time at the Morton Lane shop from three hours to two.

But when planning permission for the site was granted in 2000, Tesco was legally required to allow customers three hours of free parking a day. It is also a condition of the company's lease for the land from East Riding Council.

Alan Menzies, the council's director of planning and economic regeneration, said: "These changes have been implemented without consultation with the council and the council has no desire to see a change to the current arrangement."

A Tesco spokeswoman said: "An error was made on our part and we have now instructed our contractors to change the car park signage back to 3 hours.

"We would like to reiterate none of our customers will be charged because of this error."

HULL: A car crashed into a tree in Willerby Road yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the crash, next to the Hanson Electrical shop, at 10.09am when the silver Nissan Micra hit a tree.

A woman in her seventies was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary but her injuries were not thought to be serious.
