Peter Swan: David Meyler will be missed by Hull City

I have to admit that it took David Meyler a few games to win me over following his loan from Sunderland, but now I feel he would be missed if the Black Cats call him back after tonight's game at Derby. When he first arrived I didn't really think he offered much more than City already had at their disposal. I couldn't see what he could offer more than someone like Seyi Olofinjana, who has not been used much of late by Steve Bruce. However, I have seen in the recent games why Bruce was so keen to bring him to the KC. He brings a lot of aggression to the side in the way he plays, and importantly, although he does not have great pace, he has lots of energy. This allows him to take up good positions, and make intelligent diagonal runs into the wide areas when City's wing-backs have gone a little deep. This intelligent running and good understanding of the game is creating more opportunities for City and giving players more options on the ball. It has also brought him a couple of goals from midfield, even though he is mainly a defensive player, and those goals have proved vital in the wins over Watford and Huddersfield. Two or three weeks ago I wouldn't have said this, but he has been a key part of City's progress.
