David Meyler will go in search of a third goal in three matches at Derby - in what may turn out to be the final appearance of his loan spell.
Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill said today he may recall the Irishman after tonight's game to strengthen a Black Cats squad depleted by injury.
He told BBC Sport: "They play tonight and he would be recalled for the Christmas period, which we will have to do."
Steve Bruce is hoping the prospect of regular first-team football will yet persuade O'Neill to allow Meyler to continue with the Tigers over a testing Christmas period.
Bruce said: "I'm not privy to the injury situation at Sunderland but I'm thankful that he's still here.
"I think Martin realises that Meyler needs games and that's good news for us because he's a big player."
