A WOMAN stabbed her pet dog to death after he refused to sit near her.

Linda King, also known as Linda Glen, grabbed a 9in knife from her kitchen following a day of drinking cider.

She stabbed two-year-old German Shepherd Hatton as her husband was stroking the family pet.

Prosecutor Heather Levitt said: "She has been suffering some mental health issues recently surrounding drinking.

"She called the dog into the kitchen. She tried to get him to sit next to her but he wouldn't.

"She started tugging him by the scruff of the neck and pulled out a large silver kitchen knife and sat on the floor and held it against the dog's throat."

When the dog tried to get away she held a knife to its throat and said "Do you want me to?"

She then placed the knife on top of the dog's head so the blade was touching him before her husband grabbed the knife off her and pulled the dog to safety.

As he was stroking Hatton he heard a yelp and realised she had grabbed the knife and stabbed the dog in the abdomen.

King, 43, ran from the house in Tweed Grove, east Hull, as her husband rang for help.

He comforted the dog and held a tea towel to stem the bleeding but the animal died in his arms shortly afterwards.

Prior to the stabbing her husband rang a mental health crisis team after he became concerned about his wife's state of mind, but they refused to help because she had been drinking, the court heard.

On her arrest she assaulted a police officer who was trying to help her out of the police van.

She later told the officers: "I killed him and I didn't mean it. You don't know how much I loved that dog and I have killed him. He was my baby boy."

She pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and to assaulting a police officer at Hull Magistrates' Court.

The incident happened on July 26 at her home.

King wept in the dock as the details of the attack were read out.

Her solicitor, Luke Yarrow, said: "It is a very sad and difficult case for her and her family.

"She has some limited flashbacks but not enough to say what happened.

"She is going on what has been told to her and she is horrified. It is because she had a drink. It was a family dog who she was very fond of.

"She says prison is the worst experience of her life. She has been spat at and received abuse. She does need help and she wants help."

He urged the magistrates to pass a suspended sentence upon her to enable her to access treatment from the mental health services.

The magistrates have ordered a psychiatric report to be prepared before passing sentence.

The court heard they fear she could cause harm to the public.

Miss Levitt said: "Clearly she is not in control of her anger and animals would be at further risk from her. "She has caused the death of her own pet and continued to be violent towards the police. She poses a risk."

It follows a report by the Probation Service which says she is deemed a high risk of causing harm.

King will now be sentenced at Hull Magistrates' Court on September 2.

She has previous convictions for two batteries last year and has also committed two assaults and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The Crown Prosecution Service has asked for King to be banned from keeping or caring for animals for life.
