A DELIVERY driver who was threatened with a shotgun as he tried to foil masked robbers has had his bravery recognised by a town jeweller.

Jonathan Robshaw used his van to attempt to block raiders as they fled with £250,000 of high-value watches from Guest & Philips in Beverley.

Jeweller Karen Guest has now presented Mr Robshaw with a watch as a thank-you for his brave actions.

Mr Robshaw had pulled his van in front of the getaway car after a member of the public asked him to block it in.

Miss Guest, who together with staff had been ordered to lie on the floor at gunpoint by the robbers, praised Mr Robshaw's bravery.

She said: "He came to deliver some parcels on Tuesday morning when he got embroiled in the robbery.

"You never know how you are going to react in such a situation

"He was very brave and put himself in danger on our behalf."

Mr Robshaw said he was "absolutely speechless" when he was presented with his thank-you gift.

He said: "I was not expecting a thing, I didn't expect anything at all.

"The Guests are such a lovely family and I was very touched, to be honest."

Mr Robshaw, who does not live in the area, said members of the public had also expressed thanks and concern.

He said: "As I have been going around Beverley on my deliveries people have stopped me to talk about what happened.

"News of the robbery is obviously all over the town, it's such a close-knit place and people are talking about it."

Mr Robshaw had pulled his van in front of the getaway vehicle at the request of a passer-by, not realising at first that an armed raid was in progress.

One of the gang had pointed what appeared to be a sawn-off shotgun at him and ordered him to move his van, which he did.

He said: "After the event you think what you should have done. I thought, perhaps stupidly, I should have rammed the getaway car.

"But it was over in seconds and I just carried on and finished my day. I didn't get time to think about it until later.

"You get flashbacks but you have to carry on."

Miss Guest, a partner in the family business, also wanted to thank well-wishers following the robbery.

She said: "The community has been brilliant ever since this has happened.

"We have had an endless amount of cakes, biscuits, chocolates, cards and messages.

"The support we have had from customers and the general public has been fantastic, it makes you feel somewhat better after what happened."
