A FORMER soldier stole almost £50,000 from a security firm and spent it on luxury items for his home.
David Glass, 33, stole the cash over a two-month period while working for cash transit company Loomis, which provides thousands of pounds in cash floats to businesses.
He was working as a driver for the company, delivering cash to businesses, and took money from some of the floats.
In total he stole £49,170 and laundered some of the money with help from his wife Verity, 33, and his sister-in-law Bethany Sizer's bank accounts.
On one occasion he was delivering £23,000 to Hollywood Bowl in Kingswood and, due to a computer problem, had to return the cash to the depot. Managers then discovered the float was short by £1,180.
Glass and his wife, both of Humber Lane, Patrington, spent to money on luxuries for their home, including iPads, a flat-screen television, iPhones, Blu-ray players and a new sofa. They also bought a new car.
Prosecutor Nigel Clive said: "Police found an invoice for the purchase of a car and jewellery. It was clear these defendants were spending the money on a lavish lifestyle.
He stole the money between October and December last year and finished his last shift on Christmas Eve after handing in his resignation.
The firm conducted an investigation after it was noticed money had been going missing and discovered that Glass had been the driver on each occasion.
Glass had transferred £14,000 to his wife's account and £5,500 to his sister- in-law's account.
Jailing him for 15 months, Judge Simon Jack told Glass: "This was theft on a fairly substantial scale over a short period of time – £50,000 is a large-scale theft and the money seems to have gone on extravagant spending."
The judge told Verity Glass: "You were swept along with what was happening. You effectively turned a blind eye to it."
Sizer, of Main Street, Burstwick, was given a 12-month conditional discharge and Verity Glass was given a 12-month community order.
