Hull KR's Sean Gleeson: Get defence right and we will stand a chance at Wigan

HULL KR centre Sean Gleeson says the Robins know exactly what Wigan will throw at them tonight – but admits stopping them is an entirely different matter.

The Warriors have demonstrated their ruthless edge many times this season – most notably last weekend with a 70-0 hammering of London in the Challenge Cup semi-final.

And there was, of course, the matter of their 84-6 hiding of the Robins back on Easter Monday – a club record defeat for the Red and Whites.

They are the kind of scorelines that serve to sharpen the focus of any side visiting the DW Stadium, and Gleeson admits that is the case for KR tonight.

"We know what will come at us, but knowing what's coming and stopping it are two different things," Gleeson told the Mail.

"Wigan play the same every week and we have worked on things that will hopefully stop them. Defensively we are going to have to be very good.

"They are a top side but we can put our footprint down on their patch.

"We have to be aggressive with them and you never know what might happen."

If Rovers are to record their first win over Wigan in 12 attempts a lot will be down to their preparation over the last fortnight.

Rovers haven't beaten the Warriors since Michael Dobson, Paul Cooke and Jake Webster scored in a 20-12 win in Wigan back in May 2009.

Gleeson would love to end that barren spell, but knows each and every KR player must be at their best, and win their own individual contest with their opposite number, to stand a chance.

"There are so many dangerous players in their team that you can't concentrate on one or two of them," he said.

"Preparation is the most important thing in sport. We've done a lot of video on them and watched a few of their key players, and if we can quieten them, we can have a good crack at them.

"Everyone has to win their own individual battle though."

Rovers have had a fortnight to regather their thoughts following a 34-6 loss at Warrington which brought a five-match winning run to an end.

Despite the result, Gleeson says there were positives to take from that game into tonight's meeting with Wigan, with lessons also learned.

"We gave ourselves a chance in the first half at Warrington, and we only had ourselves to blame for the way we played in the second half," he said.

"We knew at half-time if we went out and did what we were told we'd get the two points.

"Our discipline was poor though and nothing seemed to happen for us because we gave away too many penalties."

Having missed most of the season through injury, Gleeson admits the game got the better of him at times, with the centre failing to stay composed as the contest went away from them.

But he hopes fans will take to his style of play as they see more of him in the red and white.

"You have to be fiesty, that's how I play the game. It's important to show that the game means a lot to you," he said.

"I had a few calls go against me which didn't help, but that's the way I am.

"I've had a torrid eight months with injury and illness. Mentally, it gets you down but it's just good to be out playing with the lads again.

"I've been training hard and things are coming together. I think I deserve a bit of luck starting tonight.

"Hopefully we can go well in the last five matches. We need to finish high in the table and have a good crack in the play-offs.

"The squad is really good and the coaches and conditioners are brilliant. If we get a bit of luck here and there, you never know what could happen."
