POLICE are warning residents to be vigilant, following nine burglaries in one night in Driffield.

Two of the burglaries happened in the St John's Road area of the town overnight on Sunday.

In one case, a baby was upstairs asleep while the offence took place.

Items taken include jewellery, handbags, laptops and money.

The burglaries are believed to be connected.

Detective Inspector Paul Kirby, of Bridlington CID, has now sent out letters to residents in the area warning them about the recent crimes.

Det Insp Kirby said: "There has been a run of burglaries in the Driffield area.

"Between Sunday, July 28, and Monday, July 29, nine homes have been burgled and an attempt burglary has occurred in Driffield.

"All nines homes had either left a window or door ajar or unlocked overnight."

Det Insp Kirby confirmed a man has been arrested in connection with the burglaries, and released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

He also believes some of the offenders are still out there.

Residents are encouraged to make sure they lock any doors and windows to deter thieves.

They are also warned to keep valuables out of sight and ensure their property is marked with their postcode.

DI Kirby said: "Driffield is a safe and wonderful place to live and we want to keep it that way.

"I need all residents to be the eyes and ears and ring the police if you see anything suspicious.

"I would rather take 100 calls with little pieces of information than take the call saying you have been burgled."

Police are now appealing for people in the areas of St John's Road, Highfield Avenue, Wold View Road North, Lockwood Street and The Mount to check any private CCTV footage they may have from overnight on Sunday.

DI Kirby said: "I want to reiterate that this amount of burglaries in one night is very, very unusual.

"It is rare to just have one burglary a night in Driffield so to have nine is something the town has never heard of."

Police patrols have been stepped up in the area to offer reassurance to residents.

Anyone with information about the burglaries should call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
