THEY have taught thousands of pupils across the decades, now two of Beverley High School's longest-serving teachers are retiring.

Head of IT Chris Wood joined the girls' secondary 37 years ago, in the days before the school had computers.

RE teacher Pam Lumb has been at the school for 32 years and has guided thousands of girls through their first year in school across the decades, as head of Year 7.

Both were described as "fantastic teachers" by headteacher Sharon Japp.

Ms Japp said: "They are very well respected and well liked by students, colleagues and parents.

"Chris Wood has been our head of IT and led the school through its technology status bid.

"He set up a network so we also support primary schools with their IT.

"We have got really good IT facilities and the skills of students are really high.

"Pam Lumb has been an RE teacher and was head of Year 7 for a long time, guiding girls through their first year.

"She will be fondly remembered by many students."

Pupils paid their own tribute to Mrs Lumb when they sang a special thank you song, adapted from Abba's famous hit Thank You For The Music, at their summer concert.

Mrs Lumb was overwhelmed by the surprise tribute at the concert held in a packed St Mary's Church.

She said afterwards: "I shall miss the lovely children and the fantastic staff.

"I have enjoyed the traditions of the school, the history of the school and the ethos of the school."

Head of IT Mr Wood will also have happy memories of the 850-pupil school in Norwood.

He said: "I have spent a big part of my career here. When I came we didn't have computers, although we did teach computer studies.

"We have gone from no computers to probably more than 500 computers.

"It's a really nice place to work, with great people and lovely staff.

"I am a bit of a feminist really because I believe in girls' education and doing well."

East Riding Council's portfolio for education Councillor Julie Abraham said: "These two teachers have obviously contributed to the education of many, many young people and we can only wish them all the best for their retirement."
