A DRIVER has admitted causing a mum's death after running her over as she walked home with her daughter.
Michael Radford, 24, ran over Kerry Ockelton in Saltshouse Road, east Hull, during the early hours of Sunday, July 1.
Ms Ockelton, 41, died at the scene. Her teenage daughter, Jessica, who was also hit, was treated in hospital after suffering numerous injuries.
Radford was arrested on the day of the crash after his car was found further up the road.
The father-of-two yesterday appeared at Hull Crown Court via video link from prison custody for a preliminary hearing. Through his barrister John Thackray, Radford admitted causing Ms Ockelton's death.
Mr Thackray told the court: "There are a number of important matters I would like to make clear. Firstly, there will be no bail application, this defendant knows and accepts that custody is inevitable.
"Secondly, he accepts criminal responsibility for the death in this case."
Mr Radford is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving over the legal alcohol limit, failure to stop at a road accident and failure to report an accident.
He is expected to formally plead guilty to the lesser charge of causing death by careless driving, rather than dangerous driving, at a future court hearing.
Mr Thackray said: "He will plead guilty in accordance with legal advice, which will certainly include causing death by careless driving and other associated offences."
The Honorary Recorder of Hull and the East Riding, Judge Michael Mettyear, told Radford: "This case will next be before the court in March, where it is indicated you will be sentenced.
"Someone from the Probation Service will be coming to see you and it is in your interest to co-operate with them. Between now and then you are remanded in custody."
Ms Ockelton's family attended court and were supported by traffic officers from Humberside Police.
In a statement released after Ms Ockelton's death, they: "We are all heartbroken by the tragic loss of Kerry.
"She will be remembered always as a devoted mother to Sam and Jessica and a beautiful, caring daughter to Mick and Brenda, as well as a loving and loved sister.
"Kerry was a fun-loving, outgoing person with everything to live for but who has been tragically taken from us too soon."
Jessica later paid tribute to her mum after being comforted in hospital.
She said: "To the sweetest, strongest, loving and warm-hearted person I have known who was full of life and had a heart of gold.
"Not a selfish bone in her body. No mother could have given her children what she gave us."
