FORGET the sandy stretches of Bridlington and Hornsea, Bransholme residents will be able to enjoy a beach day on their doorstep next month.
More than 80 tonnes of sand will create the estate's very own beach, bringing the feel of the coast to the city for the fifth year.
Organisers are hoping to attract a record number of families armed with buckets and spades.
Councillor Anita Harrison, chairman of residents' group URBaN, and Ray Drayton, enterprise manager at Dales Fitness Centre, are organising the annual beach day and are expecting about 800 families to attend.
Cllr Harrison said: "I am so glad we are having another beach day this year.
"It attracts more and more people each year, the kids love the day and it makes for a great atmosphere.
"We started this around five years ago because a lot of the kids don't get off the estate in the summer.
"We thought, if they can't get to the beach, then we will bring the beach to North Bransholme, and it has been really successful every year.
"Events like these are what Bransholme is all about, bringing people together and having a good time.
"I know times are hard for many residents and they won't be having a holiday so our beach day is just a little bit of sand, fun and sun, hopefully.
"The day we had last year was brilliant and I'm sure this year will be no different."
Activities will also include a climbing wall, a bouncy castle, volleyball, a bonniest baby competition, a glamorous gran contest, stalls, face painting, food and drinks and a mobile youth centre.
It is being partially funded by through Hull City Council's Clued Up programme and organisers have already secured £1,500.
Mr Drayton is now is hoping to attract further funding to put on additional activities on the day.
He said: "We are all set to have another great day and have already received some very generous financial support.
"We are still looking for a little more money to do something a bit different this time around by including a sports day that will, hopefully, feature old sports from the 1960s and 1970s.
"We are always looking for ways to make the event better and offer more activities for everyone.
"It will be a great day out for all the family, and they don't have to pay for anything. It has been so successful over the past few years that other counties are now using our beach day as a model."
The beach day will be held on the public green next to Grampian Way shopping centre on Wednesday, August 21, from 11am to 3pm.
