Ofsted makes monitoring visit to town secondary

EAST RIDING: Ofsted has told Beverley High School that further action is needed to help the secondary improve.

The girls' school was stripped of its outstanding status in May and told to improve.

Now, following a monitoring visit, Ofsted has made recommendations for strengthening action already being taken at the secondary.

The regulator said substantial work on the development plan had been led by headteacher Sharon Japp in partnership with the council.

The watchdog found the school plan was generally thorough and that senior leaders and governors were taking effective action to tackle areas requiring improvement.

HM Inspector Adrian Gray said in his report: "Staff can see that speedy action has been taken to redress the school's decline and that most of it is appropriate.

"They talked about how the focus had shifted from attainment – which is normally high – to a robust check on progress."

The school was advised to strengthen the content of its action plan by setting targets for the growth of outstanding teaching, the quality of teaching in the sixth form and specific targets for English, maths and other areas, as appropriate.

EAST YORKS: East Riding councillors have congratulated Tickton tennis ace Kyle Edmund, pictured, on his recent success in the Wimbledon tennis championships.

The 18-year-old former Beverley Grammar School boy made his debut in the men's tournament and also reached the semi-finals of the boys' singles and boys' doubles.

Councillor Bradley Birmingham told East Riding Council's meeting: "It is important that we acknowledge the sporting achievements of our young people.

"Kyle's national standing within the Lawn Tennis Association has not only increased the profile of the area and put Tickton on the map, but will, I am sure, go a long way to encourage more talented young people to get involved in a sporting activity."

BRIDLINGTON: A Bridlington garden centre will give visitors a real taste of Yorkshire when it celebrates Yorkshire Day on Thursday.

Eastfield Garden Centre will hold local produce food tastings from 8.30am to 5.30pm.
