WEST HULL: Police are launching an operation to target a rise in street prostitution.

Residents have been complaining to officers about street workers in Hessle Road and the surrounding area.

Officers are now planning to step up patrols to reduce the number of prostitutes and kerb-crawlers. They say "zero tolerance" will be shown to those caught using prostitutes.

They will be speaking to street workers to advise them where they can get the help they need to get off the streets.

Sergeant James Clough, of the Riverside neighbourhood policing team, said: "Residents in the area have suffered long enough with disruption to their daily lives.

"It's time for the street workers and their users to be aware of the effect they have on people's lives and to clear the area of the problem."

Complaints have been made about Hessle Road, the Boulevard, English Street, Witty Street and Constable Street.

Street workers have also been seen in Porter Street, Midland Street and Pease Street.

HULL: City councillor Mike Ross has been selected to stand in Hull North at the next General Election as the Liberal Democrat candidate.

It is expected he will go head to head with sitting Labour MP Diana Johnson, who narrowly held the seat in 2010 with a 641-vote majority over Lib Dem challenger Denis Healy.

Cllr Ross is currently the deputy leader of the opposition Lib Dem group at the Guildhall.

He said: "I am excited about the challenges ahead. I know the area well and the people who live there.

"I have seen the way they have been let down by Labour both locally and nationally.

"The result last time round shows that residents here want real change."

In 2010, Cllr Ross finished second in Hull West and Hessle to Labour's Alan Johnson, securing a 24.2 per cent share of the vote.

EAST YORKS: Humberside Airport will welcome an American B-17 Flying Fortress bomber this weekend.

Sally B, the only aircraft of its kind in Europe, will stop overnight at the airport between air displays at Cleethorpes Air Show tomorrow and Sunday.

Humberside Airport agreed to waive landing fees and ground handling charges.

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was used in the Second World War by the US Eighth Army Air Force.

It flew daylight missions out of British bases to Germany.

In 1989, Sally B played a starring role in the film Memphis Belle, filmed on location at nearby former RAF Binbrook.

Sally B is permanently based at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, on static display when not flying.

It is owned, operated and maintained by a team of volunteers.

With a good weather forecast, Cleethorpes Air Show is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors to the region and provide a significant boost to the economy.

HESSLE: A winning scratch card was stolen when a car was broken into.

Police say they do not know how much the scratch card had won.

It was taken along with sunglasses, a watch and CDs from a car parked in Eastfield Court on Friday.

Anyone with information about the theft should call Humberside Police on 101.
