DOZENS of former trawlermen who lost their livelihoods in the Cod Wars could miss out on compensation because they cannot be traced.

Earlier this year, the Government apologised for errors made in their earlier compensation scheme and agreed to pay £2.5m to former trawlermen.

It followed a bitter 30-year fight for pay-outs, which has been supported by Hull and Hessle MP Alan Johnson.

However, 43 ex-trawlermen and their widows have not been traced and are missing out on a consolatory payment of £1,000.

Mr Johnson said: "We are finally reaching the end of the long campaign for trawlermen's compensation.

"We thought it had ended in 2000 when the Labour Government accepted our demand that trawlermen should receive £1,000 per year of service, provided they lost their job after January 1, 1974, up to a maximum of £20,000.

"However, the original compensation scheme was dogged with anomalies around the so-called '12-week rule', which led to us referring the issue to the Parliamentary Ombudsman who came down on our side. But changes to the qualifying criteria meant many men didn't even get past the first hurdle of the new scheme and calculations based on days at sea meant the length of careers were unfairly shortened.

"We went back to the Ombud- sman who ruled a £1,000 consolatory payment be made to all those men who applied to the reopened 2009 scheme, had finished fishing after January 1, 1974, and had received less that the £20,000 maximum payment allowed under the scheme."

Mr Johnson said most of the 2,500 men, or their families where the person had died, have now been contacted.

However, the Government department responsible requires updated contact details for the 46 claimants listed here.
