HARDY fundraisers will be taking a plunge into the North Sea in Withernsea and Hornsea.

The Withernsea Lions hope their event on Boxing Day will prove a splash hit for charities in the region.

In Hornsea, dozens will be diving straight into 2013 with a New Year's Day dip raising funds for the Hornsea Inshore Rescue.

Councillor Gordon Hodgson, who is from the Lions, said the event takes place at the Central Promenade in Withernsea at 11am.

He said: "It's been going on for a number of years.

"It's a challenge for people.

"You get the odd ones in fancy dress, but most people strip off, dash in and dash out.

"People get very competitive and we usually have a couple of hundred spectators watching from the sidelines."

Although Councillor Hodgson will not be taking part in the dip himself, he will be a welcome sight for the fundraisers.

He said: "We will be there handing out tea, coffee and soup.

"We used to just raise funds for the Lions, but now we let people raise funds for whichever organisation or charity they want.

"It is a bit of a goodwill gesture and a chance for people to show their commitment for charities or organisations that have helped them in the past.

"We will be there with buckets collecting money for the Lions."

In Hornsea, 25 people have already signed up for a New Year's Day dip, raising funds for the town's Inshore Rescue team.

Among those taking part for the third year is Andy Bullard.

The Hornsea Inshore Rescue crew member said: "Blink and you will miss my dip.

"My theory is to run like the blazes so I am in the sea before I know it, swim like crazy and when the brain clicks in, I turn around and get back out.

"It is a great day and in previous years we've had loads of people watching.

"People should take part and take a dip. It's just one of those crazy challenges. You feel so good afterwards."

Anyone wanting to sign up to the Withernsea dip just needs to turn up on Boxing Day at 11am.

It is free to enter and people will be able to get changed at the Meridian Centre in Queen Street.

The Hornsea dip takes place at 1pm on New Year's Day.

Anyone taking part is asked to raise funds for the Hornsea Inshore Rescue.

Call Sue Hickson-Marsay on 07796 257989 to get involved.
