Steve Harper says joining Steve Bruce and Hull City felt like the "perfect option" after ending his career with Newcastle United. And the veteran goalkeeper has revealed he turned down several other offers - including a Premier League option - in favour of the Tigers. "I've come across Steve Bruce a fair few times in the last 20 years and I also know a few of the lads here – it just felt like the perfect option," said Harper, who watched his new side from the dugout at North Ferriby last night. "It's a new page in my career and it feels fresh and exciting. It's probably just what I need at this stage and I'm really looking forward to it." The 38-year-old spent two decades at Newcastle, where he made 157 appearances, and was expected to retire this summer. Now, the chance of extending his Premier League career has persuaded Harper to sign a one-year deal at the KC, with the transfer going through last night after a medical. And while Harper is expected to start behind Allan McGregor in the Tigers' pecking order, Bruce expects the experienced stopper will bring wider benefits to his squad. "Steve's experience will be a great help for us and I'm delighted to welcome him on board," said Bruce. "He's had vitually 20 years in the Premier League so he's vastly experienced. "Steve will come in and help the younger lads in the squad because he's a great pro and a good lad around the dressing room. "It's vitally important to have that and we've now got three goalkeepers that are all ours." Harper said he was looking forward to working with City's younger keepers. "I've got a lot of experience in the Premier League and I'm sure that will come in handy," he told City's official site. "I've already said to the rest of the lads, and particularly the younger goalkeepers, that if they want to ask me anything I'm here to help."
