STUDENTS have come under fire from residents for making the area around the University of Hull unsightly.
Since bin collections turned fortnightly in May, permanent residents say the problem has got even worse.
Now, they are appealing to students to show consideration – and ensure their bins are put out on time.
Councillor Dave McCobb said: "Residents who want their area to look nice are having to look out at a sea of bins and it doesn't seem fair."
Cllr McCobb highlighted Beresford Avenue and Heathcote Street in his Beverley ward, in west Hull, as problems areas, after receiving complaints.
The Mail visited the area and found several overflowing bins, with black bags, which binmen are not obliged to collect, and even old duvets and pillows stacked next to them.
Ken Spencer, who has lived in Heathcote Street since 1973, has reported other forms of antisocial behaviour to the university in the past.
"The demographics of the area have changed," he said. "I've been known to put the students' bins away for them, but then you create another problem with rubbish mounting up if they are not brought out again on collection day."
In recent months, the university's Students' Union has organised litter picking patrols and urged its members to respect their neighbourhoods.
Professor Ian Pashby, pro vice- chancellor for engagement at the University of Hull, said: "We see ourselves very much as a part of the community, and so we are always keen to resolve issues as soon as possible in order to ensure that the University of Hull continues to be a positive influence on those that live and work nearby.
"We work proactively with the Hull University Union, Hull City Council, landlords and students throughout the year to ensure that students know how to dispose of rubbish before they leave.
"We regularly encourage our students to recycle as much as they can to reduce landfill waste and also made sure that students were informed about the recent changes to the bin collection routines.
"When issues do arise, we ask that residents give us a call on 01482 346311 and ask for the Accommodation Office."
