FIRE crews spent 45 minutes cutting a woman out of her car after a serious crash in Cottingham Road.
The young driver was travelling towards Beverley Road when another car crashed into the back of her Volvo.
Emergency services rushed to the scene near the Lidl supermarket and The Haworth Arms yesterday afternoon.
Fire crews from Hull attended at about 12.13pm and the roof of the blue Volvo was cut off.
The woman sat trapped in the car with suspected spinal injuries while worried onlookers stood by at the roadside.
There was nobody else in the vehicle at the time of the crash and the man driving the bronze Renault Mégane that crashed into the Volvo was uninjured.
Ben Kelly, manager at Hull fire station, said they had about 13 people attending the accident and the woman was comforted by paramedics as she was cut from the wreckage.
He said: "We were told there was someone trapped inside the car and brought along cutting tools.
"It looks like a rear-end shunt but police have to carry out their investigation to find out exactly what happened.
"The woman was conscious throughout the rescue and she was lifted onto a spinal board before being taken to hospital.
"We are always very cautious in these situations and closed the road off."
Motorists were directed away from the accident and the road remained closed between The Gardeners Arms pub and The Haworth Arms for more than two hours in both directions.
John Thomas, owner of Go Records in Cottingham Road, said he realised there had been a crash when he saw flashing lights outside his shop.
He said: "There have been a few collisions along this road but they usually happen when cars are coming out of the supermarket car park.
"I was surprised to see it where it was and didn't even hear a bang.
"It looked very bad when I went outside and I saw the aftermath before three fire engines arrived.
"A female police officer spoke to me and asked if I'd seen it happen and whether or not we have CCTV.
"Sadly we don't have any. I just hope the woman recovers quickly."
The driver remained in the ambulance for some time before being taken to Hull Royal Infirmary and it is not yet known how serious her injuries are.
East Yorkshire Motor Services kept passengers and motorists informed of the collision on Twitter.
A post read: "We're getting reports of a major accident in Cottingham Road outside Lidl.
"Our Service 105 buses are diverting via Newland Avenue and Queens Road."
Humberside Police had reopened the road by 2.20pm and buses were running as normal again.
Anyone with information about the crash should call police on 101.
