A WOMAN has described the horrific moment her car ploughed into a young mum, killing her instantly.

Margaret Jill Wilson was on her way home along the A614 near Market Weighton when her car crashed into mum-of-one Tanya Bailey.

At an inquest into Miss Bailey's death, Mrs Wilson said: "I wish I could go back in time and the whole thing would never have happened."

Deputy Coroner Rosemary Baxter recorded a verdict of accidental death.

However, Miss Bailey's family still have questions about what happened to her on the night she was killed.

Miss Bailey, 34, was a passenger in a black Ford Focus being driven by her boyfriend Graham White on January 24.

Three other men, Terry Lownes, David Griffith and Russell Thomas McKalroy, were also passengers in the car, which was travelling from Bridlington to Sheffield when the accident happened.

An argument is believed to have broken out between Miss Bailey and Mr Griffith, which caused Mr White to stop the car at the roadside and ask Mr Griffith to get out.

Miss Bailey, of Wellington Road, Bridlington, also climbed out of the car.

The argument is believed to have continued in to the middle of the road, with a number of shoves and pushes exchanged between her and Mr Griffith.

At about 8.30pm that evening, Mrs Wilson was travelling towards Driffield when she noticed a man in a striped jumper moving in the road from left to right.

She told the inquest: "Then there was some sort of movement from the left-hand side, but it was so dark, I couldn't see much."

Travelling at about 40mph, Mrs Wilson slammed on her brakes, and then heard a loud thud.

Mrs Wilson pulled her car over, and the emergency services were called to help Miss Bailey, who was found 20m from the vehicle in a hedge. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination revealed she had died of multiple injuries.

The four men Miss Bailey was travelling with were arrested at the scene for a criminal damage offence. Mr White was also arrested for driving while unfit.

Mr Griffith, Mr Lownes and Mr McKalroy were later released without charge.

Mr White was charged with the two offences and was due to appear at Bridlington Magistrates' Court this week for a case management hearing.

Miss Bailey's mother Jill Stepniewski told Mrs Wilson she did not blame her for her daughter's death.

She said: "I hope your nightmares can now go away and you can get some closure."

Miss Bailey's family said in a statement: "We will never really know what happened to Tanya on that night.

"Her death has left a big hole our hearts and a four-year-old without his mum."
