A new leash of life! How agile dogs are helping their owners lose weight

SKIPPING over hurdles, rushing through tunnels and carefully crossing see-saws as quickly as possible is all in a day's work for Wiz, Sky and Rosie.

However, the same could not initially be said for the border collies' owner Jenny Lambert.

Mrs Lambert, of Fimber, near Wetwang, and her partner Ray have well and truly caught the dog agility bug.

But to keep up with her latest pet, Mrs Lambert admits she had to shed a few pounds.

She said: "When I got Wiz I realised I would have to lose weight in order to keep up with him.

"I started to look at my diet and exercise regime in February and since then I've lost a stone and dropped a dress size and now weigh the same I weighed in my twenties.

"Now I'm at the right weight and working hard to maintain it.

"I tried dieting many times before but never quite managed it – but gaining a little time when running with Wiz was a real incentive.

"It's not only helped with the running but also helped my health on a day-to-day basis."

Mrs Lambert, 56, started competing in agility in 2008 with Rosie after being introduced to the sport by a friend.

It wasn't long before her husband decided to try out the canine activity too and now the pair compete as far away as Northampton with their three dogs.

"I'd always wanted a border collie and, when I turned 50, I decided it was the time to get what I had always wanted," she said.

"My hubby came along to the shows enthusiastically and we decided we would get another puppy and he would train the puppy in the early stages and I would then take over.

"Agility is so addictive. It's a great challenge and a real pleasure to work together as a team with your four-legged friends.

"It's such a rewarding sport and the dogs have so much fun."

The pair are currently training several times a week for the Kennel Club International Agility Festival, taking place at Rockingham Castle in Leicestershire next month.

The event will feature 2,500 dogs of all types, sizes and experience levels competing across 15 agility rings, with dogs jumping and weaving their way around the various courses.

"We're really looking forward to it; it's such a great competition," said Mrs Lambert who attends more than ten dog agility competitions a year.

"We love taking part in agility and this has motivated me to go the extra mile.

"If it wasn't for our dogs and agility I don't think I would have achieved my weight goal."

Despite the couple entering separate dogs, Mr Lambert says the pair don't get competitive with each other.

"It is good fun and I do enjoy the competitive element, but I don't compete in the same category as Jenny," he said.

"I'm about two years behind Jenny with Sky so there is some catching up to do."
