IT COULD be Lady Gaga, Bill Gates or Steve Jobs who win him the title of Top Trumps UK Champion.

Jacob Ablett, 11, is shuffling his best cards as he prepares to join eleven other youngsters at the grand final of the National Schools Top Trumps Tournament, which will be held this Saturday in London.

The Bransholme boy has seen off more than 100,000 children, aged between eight and 11, for a place in the competition.

The Biggin Hill Primary School pupil first beat classmates in Years 5 and 6 at his school, which took him through to a gruelling online elimination round.

Jacob said he spent up to seven hours battling it out for three weeks against 1,200 other UK school champs.

He said: "My mum didn't want me to spend too much time staring at a computer but she also wanted me to win.

"I've never been to London before and I'm looking forward to getting the train to Kings Cross and going on the tube.

"Top Trumps is a great game and I play it with all of my friends in the playground at school.

"I can't wait to go to London to try to beat the other regional champions."

The eleven others in the final are from all over the UK, including West Lothian in Scotland.

Stuart Clark, deputy headteacher at Biggin Hill, said the entire school has been following Jacob's progress and cheering him on at lunchtimes.

He said: "We are very proud of him and he is a great ambassador for the school. We are sure he will do fantastically well in London.

"When I was younger, Top Trumps cards were banned at school and there'd be big consequences if you were caught with cards in school, but we've only seen the benefits of the game.

"When we held the competition in school, we were sent cards, which were really educational for the children.

"They love the game and being a bit competitive and it means they are enjoying something together."

Jacob's mum, Kerry Bradley, 32, works as a teaching assistant at the school.

She said: "We thought Jacob did well to win the school competition, but we were amazed when we found out he was leading the national event.

"We are so proud of him. I will be going with him to London, along with his dad, David. We've never been to the city, so it will be great to take the time to look at the sights.

"I never doubted Jacob. When he puts his mind to something, he does everything he can to win."

Fiona Hortopp, head of marketing at Winning Moves UK, the owners and makers of the Top Trumps brand, sent her congratulations to the young talent, who has also mastered Go Fish and Snap.

She said: "He is a regional champion already, having come out ahead of so many other schoolchildren across the country.

"We wish him the very best in the final, where he will be bidding to become the champion of champions and lift a gleaming trophy."

The National Children's Bureau carried out detailed research on the tournament and found the game helps children improve both their numeracy and literacy skills.

Ms Hortopp said: "These findings have resulted in heads and teachers seeing the advantage of bringing in Top Trumps as a teaching tool in the classroom."

Jacob said his favourite Top Trumps cards are from his famous faces pack, including pop star Lady Gaga and entrepreneurs Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, who all score highly.

"I have seven packs and sometimes play with my younger brother, Rhys, but he's not as good as me," he said.

"It's an easy game to play. You deal out 15 cards each and chose a status on each card, whichever is higher wins.

"Ahead of the final, I'll be looking at which cards I have and which ones are my strongest.

"I definitely think I can beat the others and get the trophy."
