SEWERBY Hall and Gardens was evacuated today, when an MoD bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion in the grounds of the tourist venue.
A quantity of old marine pyrotechnics and flairs were blown up in a controlled explosion at 1.30pm.
The country house venue was evacuated this morning because of concerns about the items, discovered in a clear-out of archives at the building.
The bomb squad carried out a controlled detonation in the grounds, away from the country house building.
A spokesman for Humberside Police said: "It was a live charge of the type that they used to fire rescue lines.
"It was found while they were doing some clearing out of old archival equipment which was being removed to go to the coastguard.
"The EOD (Explosives and Ordnance Division) was called out and it was made safe. There was no risk to the public."
It is understood the items were the property of Marine and Coastguard Agency and had been stored at the venue following an exhibition some years ago.
A spokesman for the EOD unit said: "It was a quantity of old marine pyrotechnics and flairs but because of the state they were in, we have been contacted and a controlled explosion was carried out to get rid of them."
A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said:"A small number of flares, which were part of a collection of Coastguard artifacts, were destroyed by the Army Explosives and Ordnance Division this morning.
"The flares were in storage at Sewerby Hall but have never been on public display. They were being prepared for transport to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency's training centre in Dorset."
