HE HAS helped build bridges with the transgender community and increased trust between Humberside Police and young people.

Now, Inspector Stephen Lamb is to be appointed MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours, in recognition of his services to the police and charitable fundraising.

Insp Lamb joined Humberside Police following a 23-year naval career, applying his skills within numerous operational roles.

Now he is at the forefront of community policing, working with diverse groups.

Insp Lamb said: "This came out of the blue.

"I was in the garden when the letter came and my wife handed it to me.

"I just saw the Cabinet Office stamp and wondered what on earth it was.

"I am very proud and honoured to receive this.

"We are looking forward to heading to Buckingham Palace – particularly my wife – and meeting the Queen. " The new chief constable of Humberside Police, Justine Curran, has been awarded the Queen's Policing Medal for her previous role as Tayside Police chief constable. Mark Jennings, a former Humberside Police sergeant, was also awarded the medal.

Insp Lamb established a liaison with Hull's first dedicated Gender Shift centre, which has since closed, providing support and reassurance to members of this hard-to-reach group.

Actively promoting an understanding of hate crime, he has helped build confidence among members of the transgender community in Hull.

He said: "It is fundamental to neighbourhood policing to try to include everyone.

"It became part of my everyday business to liaise with the transgender community.

"We have made good inroads and have broken down barriers.

"They are a hard-to-reach group but also a vulnerable part of society."

Insp Lamb, who lives with wife Jackie and has three grown up daughters, has also been working to improve relations between the police and young people.

He had led on the police input to the national scheme Playing for Success, an educational programme in partnership with Hull City and both rugby clubs.

Insp Lamb, 53, said: "Since getting involved, we have worked with thousands of children.

"We have helped them with numeracy and literacy by giving them work books based on police themes.

"We have also enhanced the experience with quizzes and visits to police departments."

As well as his work in the community, Insp Lamb has always used his interest in running half marathons to support charities including the National Asthma Campaign, NSPCC and Macmillan Cancer.

He also feels the award is for his time in the military.

He said: "I am particularly proud, as this also recognises my military service.

"I was in the Navy for 23 years. My life has been dedicated to public service.

"I served all over the world on everything from a huge aircraft carrier to a small fisheries protection vessel.

"I also spent sometime in Gibraltar and one of my daughters was even born there."

No date has been set for the MBE appointment but Insp Lamb will travel to Buckingham Palace within the next five months.

Charity swimmer Ian Burdekin, from Bridlington, has been awarded the British Empire Medal after carrying out more than 50 sponsored swims.
