Walking through Queens Gardens the other day I went past the outdoor stage constructed as a memorial to the late Hull-born guitarist Mick Ronson.
It was late Monday morning and the only thing actually on it was an empty table and chairs from the neighbouring park café.
Actually, it's not much of a stage, just a raised concrete circle edged with red bricks. Blink and you would probably miss it.
I seem to recall it also has a mobile roof, or at least it used to.
On closer inspection, weeds were making a valiant attempt to push through the cracks.
Having attended the recent funeral of Ronson's fellow Spiders From Mars band member Trevor Bolder, it struck me that surely the time is right for a much more fitting permanent tribute to Hull's most famous rock band somewhere in their home city.
At the time, the idea behind the stage was well-intentioned.
It was the brainchild of my old pal Peter Allen, who was in charge of parks and gardens at Hull City Council. He rightly made the connection between the Ronson's previous career in the same council department before David Bowie came calling and his love of playing music.
At Trevor Bolder's funeral service, there was so much love and warmth for the man in the room, I wish I could have bottled it.
Like Ronson, he was just an ordinary bloke who loved his music and was more than willing to share his knowledge and experience with others.
Drummer Woody Woodmansey, the last surviving Spider, told several stories about those heady days in the early 1970s during the service at St Mary's Church in Beverley.
I particularly liked his tale about playing in front of huge crowds for the first time in America.
He said: "Before the show, Trevor and me sneaked on stage and peeped through the curtain because we had no idea what 10,000 people looked like.
"We had a peep, looked at each other and went, 'Whoah!'."
Next week we find out if Hull's bid to be the UK City of Culture in 2017 has made it onto the shortlist.
If it's not too late, might I suggest that a nod towards the musical influence of the Hull men from Mars should be in the mix somewhere if we get through.
