A MAN threatened to torch a shop assistant's home and watch her children burn to death after she challenged him over stealing a can of beer.

Bob Marley, 51, has been previously jailed for urinating in front of hundreds of war veterans during a Remembrance Sunday march.

Hull Crown Court heard Marley threatened the woman when he tried to steal the can of alcohol from Lidl.

He told her: "I will get revenge and I will find out where you live. I will burn your house down and watch your kids burn to death."

Prosecutor Stephen Welsh said: "He made several threats, despite the police warning him to desist in his behaviour."

Later, Marley was found outside the Tokyo nightclub in Anlaby Road, west Hull, at 1.20pm laid on the pavement.

An ambulance was called and he was treated for minor cuts to the side of his head but refused to go to hospital.

He asked medical staff to take him home but then became abusive to PCSOs who were there.

Marley told them: "I hate the police, you are all scum, send me to prison – you will be paying for me."

Marley also swore at people in the street.

Under the terms of an Asbo he was previously given, Marley is banned from causing harassment, alarm or distress to members of the public.

Marley, of Hopwood Close, west Hull, pleaded guilty to two breaches of his Asbo.

He has breached the order more than 20 times and has 227 convictions, the court heard.

The Crown Prosecution Service asked the judge to extend his Asbo for another five years. It is due to expire in November.

Marley's barrister Jo Golding said: "The inevitable conclusion in the presentence report appears to be custody and he is very well aware of the fact that, ordinarily, breaches of Asbos and the nature of the breaches would result in a custodial sentence.

"He has been in custody since May for stealing a can of lager.

"He is someone who clearly demonstrates that Asbos don't work.

"He does not deliberately and woefully disregard orders but he has a history of trauma.

"He became a chronic alcoholic but he has spent six months alcohol-free."

Judge Simon Jack deferred sentencing him for six months to give him a chance to see if he can stay off alcohol.

He told Marley: "You have breached your Asbo on more than 20 previous occasions.

"Your advocate suggests any Asbo is bound to fail but I do not accept that.

"You are a human being, you have a brain and you are capable of deciding whether or not you drink and swear at people.

"I will defer sentence for six months. If you have done what you need to do to detox yourself and you stay out of trouble then you will not get locked up."

The judge also deferred the decision on whether or not to extend Marley's Asbo until the next hearing.
