A police club was transformed into Hawaii for a fundraising luau in aid of the Daisy Appeal.
People arrived at the Inglemire Lane club in Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts and garlands, danced to Hawaii Five O, Wipe Out and Club Tropicana, and enjoyed a buffet and raffle, raising almost £1,000.
The Daisy Appeal is a local charity established to help improve treatment and research opportunities in a variety of common diseases, most notably cancer, heart disease and neurological illness.
The evening was organised by Melanie Symes, 41, who a few years ago went to the doctors after experiencing intermittent pains. She went for some tests, and then a scan. That scan was inconclusive so there was another scan and an MRI before she was told last July that she had a tumour on one of her ovaries.
Melanie, a legal secretary from Sutton, near Hull, married to Andy with whom she has two children, had a total hysterectomy and both ovaries removed. She decided before the operation that she would celebrate good results with a charity event. She wanted to put on something colourful so decided on the Hawaiian theme.
Having successfully raised £8 million to enable the construction of a Medical Research Centre at Castle Hill Hospital in 2008, the Daisy Appeal has now moved on to phase 2 - to create a permanent patient scanning and research centre which will cost £6.8 million.
