Peter Swan on why securing existing Hull City players is crucial for the new season.

AHEAD of the new Premier League season the number one topic for Hull City fans seems to be regarding who boss Steve Bruce is going to bring in.

Fans want to see new faces and who the club are chasing is a hot subject for debate.

But away from the transfer rumour and speculation, there are two players well known to City fans who need to get their deals sorted first.

While external recruitment is vitally important, for me there are no bigger deals to do right now than sorting the futures of James Chester and Ahmed Elmohamady.

Chester's contract saga has gone on long enough and, after saying all last season he'd wait until the end of the campaign to get it sorted, it still remains unresolved.

The fact he has a year left to run means there are no worries about him going anywhere, but it is a contract City need to get done soon so they can stop concerning themselves with that issue and move on to other targets.

Of the Tigers squad Chester is the one I feel is best able to make the step up in quality to the Premier League.

The defender gives the impression being under the spotlight of the Premier League won't affect him.

He reads the game really well and I feel he will blossom in the top flight.

He's not the complete player and he needs to work on his concentration because we've seen him defend well and then give a sloppy pass coming out of defence, which suggests he has a habit of switching off when he thinks his hard work is done.

But that is an issue he can work on and he has the qualities to be a big player for City in the top flight.

The same goes for Elmohamady. If you look around the leagues you will struggle to find a player of Elmohamady's quality that can give you what he gives, at the price he is available for.

A player of his quality being available at £2m is great value. He's consistently good, has a fantastic end product and his service from out wide will be a huge asset.

Like Chester, I fully expect him to be at the Tigers when the new season starts.

From my experience, players sign for managers rather than signing for clubs. They sign for a boss who they think will play them, get the best out of them and give them an opportunity to play good football and achieve something.

Bruce has already delivered by giving both the chance to play top-flight football next season and I expect they'll stay and sign their deals soon.
