A HULL firm is lighting up the renewable energy industry.

Ciralight UK has launched its latest product aimed at capturing natural light to reduce energy consumption.

Active Skylight, which has been launched nationally, works by capturing available light and driving the light down into the building for up to ten hours a day.

The firm, which is based in Hedon Road, east Hull, is the sole UK distributor of the US developed Active Skylight, which has already been successfully launched across Europe and the US.

Steve Parkinson, of Ciralight UK, said: "Our active skylights allow artificial lights to be turned off during daylight hours, reducing electricity bills and ensuring a longer life for lights and light fixtures.

"It's also been proven that people work better under natural daylight compared with artificial light, which means better staff morale and fewer accidents and errors.

"Helping to reduce energy consumption can also mean reduced carbon emissions, a reduced carbon footprint and greater sustainability."

The new light can be fitted to commercial buildings such as offices, factories, retail stores and public facilities including schools.

Mr Parkinson said the firm is now actively targeting businesses across the city.

He said: "It's more a question of who we are not talking to than who we are talking to, and we have had a great endorsement of the product from Hull City Council."

The company has recently agreed a sale with the council to install the lights at its KWL building in Stockholm Road, which houses the authority's fleet of maintenance vehicles.

This follows a successful pilot installation in Ings Road Library.

The Active Skylight is housed in a rooftop plastic dome and uses a GPS controller and a microprocessor that tracks and calculates the position of the sun.

Light is reflected from a mirror down through the roof and into the building.

The product, which is called Suntrackers in the US, has been rebranded for the UK market due to its ability to enhance natural light on cloudy days.

Mr Parkinson said: "The marginal difference between the results of a typical skylight and our Active Skylights is far greater in northern latitudes than in more southern areas with greater sunlight."

Companies are being urged more and more to consider energy reducing measures to apply to their business in order to reduce overheads as well a protecting the environment.

Helen Wheeler-Osman, projects director at Environmental Strategies Limited, said businesses are already seeking greener alternatives.

She said: "Anything companies do to reduce their energy consumption goes straight to the bottom line and can have a positive effect on the business's finances and the environment, so any technology that can help with those things is welcomed."
