STUDENTS at a Bransholme school are taking part in a national campaign to promote healthy eating.

This week, pupils at Winifred Holtby Academy will take part in lessons focused on promoting a healthy lifestyle.

It will be a feature in all lessons at the school.

Students in maths will be looking at receipts from supermarkets, going online and comparing prices of healthy food, using mathematical skills of data analysis and graphs.

The healthy eating theme in English will be through persuasive writing and in language lessons at the school, pupils will look at how other countries eat healthily.

Anita Hoy, extended learning co-ordinator at the school, said: "At Winifred Holtby Academy we value the health of our students and realise that healthy eating is just one part of a broader healthy lifestyle.

"As a result, we are tackling healthy lifestyle head on and are addressing all aspects from the physical health of students to the emotional health of students.

"During healthy lifestyle week all subject areas will be taking a cross-curricular, collaborative approach to the issue of healthy lifestyle – each lesson throughout the week, across all subject areas, will focus on healthy lifestyles."

Pupils are using all aspects of the curriculum to learn about healthy eating, including taking their heart rates in science.

As well as learning about healthy eating, pupils will also take part in a Dragons' Den-style competition.

Each tutor group in Year 7 will compete against each other to produce a healthy lifestyle presentation based on the information they have gathered throughout the week.

The presentations will be judged by people from businesses and organisations from outside the school.

The winning presentation will be sent out to other primary schools.

Mrs Hoy said: "This project is aimed at developing students' independence and ability to manage their own learning across all subject areas as well as be creative, reflective and work effectively together in teams when putting together their presentations.

"Students will become active participants in helping to improve health within the community as this message will be passed on to all of our schools through the students' presentations."
