A night to remember, captured forever

HORSE-DRAWN carriages and plush limousines are being prepared for prom season.

Girls from secondary schools across the region are hunting for their perfect dresses and glittering shoes, while the boys are searching for smart suits.

Once again, the Mail will be attending the glamorous events to snap each school's special day.

Every year, the proms get more adventurous, with some guests arriving in helicopters and vintage vehicles.

Jo Thompson, a fashion assistant at Samantha's Boutique in Chanterlands Avenue, west Hull, said pupils had been browsing for prom items since November.

"The girls come in very early to make sure they get the right dress," she said.

"They range from £170 to £500 and families often save up for the occasion.

"It's a lovely event for students.

"We didn't have a prom when I was at school. I think we just had a disco and I didn't even go to that.

"It would have been great and pupils have such a fabulous time."

Instead of girls going for a trend this year, such as aquamarine gowns or red fairytale dresses, they have been more adventurous.

"They have picked really different styles this year," Jo said.

"From short dresses to straight frocks and big gowns, they all have something different for their proms."

Many boutiques also have a policy of not supplying the same dress to more than one pupil at each school, to save embarrassment.

"Nobody wants to turn up to their prom and see somebody else wearing their dress," Jo said. "We do this for all of the schools and it's great for local business.

"Proms are a very American idea but they get bigger every year in Britain."

Samantha's has been open for 41 years and has been supplying prom dresses for about ten years.

Jo said: "Girls like to get dressed up.

"The sparkly items are always popular and the boys love proms as well."

As in previous years, The Mail is encouraging schools to contact our photographic desk directly for their big day to be featured in a round-up of professional photographs.

Glamorous gowns, extravagant arrivals and treasured moments with school friends will be captured on camera and the photographs can be bought by families after the event.

Schools that would like their prom featured in the Mail should call 01482 315301.
