Humberside Police say they monitoring social media following attempts to organise racially-motivated trouble in the region.
The warning comes after a mosque was set alight at around 10pm on Sunday in a suspected arson attack.
Two people have been arrested on suspicion of arson following the blaze at a mosque in Grimsby.
Unconfirmed reports suggest petrol bombs were thrown inside the building. The fire was extinguished and no one was injured, officers said.
Officers also say they have discovered a number of messages on social networking sites that appeared to invite people to meet at locations in the area and cause trouble.
A force spokesman said: "Those people should be aware that we are monitoring these sites in Humberside and we will take action against those intent on
attempting to incite violence or post messages of a racial nature." Nationally, there have been reports of a backlash against the Muslim community following the murder of soldier, Drummer Lee Rigby, in Woolwich, London, last week.
