Derby reaction: 'Scoring Hull's winning try means the world' - Chris Green

CHRIS Green says he was overwhelmed to have scored the match-winning derby try in the biggest moment of his burgeoning career.

Green's 78th-minute score may have been engulfed in controversy, but the 23-year-old couldn't care, celebrating instead a moment to cherish.

Green was born in Leeds, but after spending every year but his first in Hull he's black and white through and through.

"As a local lad it means the world," Green told the Mail.

"A few of the boys – Richard Horne and Kirk Yeaman – came up to me and told me that's what local pride is all about, so I'm delighted.

"It's absolutely overwhelming. To score the winner in the last couple of minutes is outstanding for me and the boys.

"It has got to be up there along with my debut. Beating Rovers in the last couple of minutes and scoring in front of the Hull fans was outstanding. Unbelievable."

Green's try was his first of the season and his most important in Hull colours, winning the derby for Hull despite a below-par performance by Peter Gentle's men.

Despite being offside from Danny Houghton's kick, the prop's try was awarded by video referee Steve Ganson, who has apologised for getting the decision wrong.

"I don't know if I was onside or offside and I don't really care at the end of the day. I just went for it," added Green. "I just saw the ball go up and anything can happen with a rugby ball. You've got to be in the right place at the right time and luckily I was there.

"It's good revenge isn't it? To lose in the last minute last year – I wasn't playing in that game, but to win this at the back end is really good.

"We've been in good form and what was pleasing was we found a way to win. It might not have been the best display but we hung on in there.

"Possibly we might not have done that earlier in the season. Everything happens with confidence and the momentum we've had behind us going into each game made sure we got the win."

Hull's display was a far cry from their impressive effort at Warrington a week earlier.

Failing to take their chances in a scrappy performance, Hull took an early lead through Richard Whiting before struggling for possession and territory.

With a clash against reigning champions Leeds Rhinos up next on Friday, Green says Hull will take their derby victory and focus on improving this week.

Green added: "This is definitely a big game on Friday now. The Super League champions at home, it's going to be a good turn out.

"We'll get straight back on it this week and look forward to that.

"We'll take each week as it comes and build on it each week. There's always improvement in our game and we are striving to be better."
