DRESSED in a beautiful wedding gown, Debbie Grant will bravely step down the aisle of St John the Evangelist Church today. The walk towards her future husband Bob Bury has been a long one for the blushing bride. Just last year, Debbie, 44, and Bob, 63, had to cancel their wedding plans after Debbie was struck down with a rare form of pneumonia. She went into a coma and had to have both legs, most of her right hand and her little finger on her left hand amputated. She could have married Bob after the operation but decided to postpone the wedding until she could walk down the aisle. "I'm a bit nervous, but because people will all be looking at me, not because I think I'll fall," said Debbie, who spoke to the Mail ahead of the wedding. "There were times when I thought I wouldn't be able to walk down the aisle, but I had a test run and that went okay. "I'm excited to be marrying Bob – I've waited long enough for it. "I know it doesn't sound good, but I try to be quite negative about the whole thing – at least that way if something happens, I am prepared for it. "I know I shouldn't be like that though, and I know I'll enjoy the day." Debbie, who lives with Bob in Gilberdyke, had been for a wedding dress fitting the day before she became ill last year. She went to Hull Royal Infirmary but was soon rush to Glenfield Hospital near Leicester when doctors realised the severity of her condition. She went into a six-week coma and then had to have several surgeries, including having both legs amputated below the knees. Debbie's brave recovery, which included learning to walk on prosthetic legs, was charted in the ITV programme Nursing the Nation, broadcast earlier this year. On Thursday, Bob travelled to East Yorkshire from Brazil, and his role in the merchant navy. He said: "She wants to do the full ceremony standing up if she can. "But we'll have some chairs just in case. "I'm over the moon and cannot wait to marry her – it should have happened a long time ago." The couple will marry at St John the Evangelist Goole Parish Church this afternoon. Afterwards, a reception will be held at the Lowther Hotel in Goole. Reverend Rob Taylor, who will be leading the wedding ceremony, said: "Every wedding is a joyful occasion, but I am extra delighted to be doing this one. "Under these circumstances, Debbie and Bob's wedding will be an extra special delight. "I'll be wishing them all the best for their future and hope all their dreams and wishes are fulfilled."
