Here at Blacktoft Sands, we are having a bit of a sound theme around the reserve. During these last few months we have been listening as well as seeing the wildlife around the site.
Take the birds, spring is an excellent time to hear the songs and calls of many of our feathered friends around the reserve. The avocets make a clute, clute call and get very vocal with anybody that gets too close to them. The bittern continues to do its booming. Many of our small birds are vocal at the moment as they try to attract a mate or protect that territory - the warblers come all the way back from Africa and immediately start calling from the reeds. The grasshopper warbler is one of these birds and guess what it sounds like a grasshopper.
But it is not just the birds that are vocal - we have been listening to insects too from the buzzing of a bee to the barking of a roe deer. And, bats too come evening.
The sound theme continues until the end of the month - with special clues around the reserve, mystery sound feature on our website and knowledgeable staff/volunteers present in the reception hut.
