HUNDREDS of runners young and old descended on Beverley for the market town's annual 10km race.

More than 1,400 people took part in the main competition, starting next to the minster, and dozens of children enjoyed a 2km fun run at the Leisure Centre.

It was organised by Beverley Athletic Club.

Chairman Rob Reid said: "As a community event, it's fantastic to see everyone here and at the finish it was packed out.

"This was the race's 20th anniversary and I've had a new logo designed by a student from Longcroft School.

"We sold out the tickets in two-and-a-half days, which is absolutely phenomenal."

Mr Reid was too busy to compete himself.

But his son Issac, 11, took part in the fun run and dashed home in under 11 minutes.

The Molescroft Primary School pupil said: "I haven't done the fun run for the past three years because I've had football.

"But I really like running and I thought it was a change.

"It was really good fun and I liked it."

Competitors came from all over the country.

Training officer Amanda Dean was part of a contingent of 22 runners from West Hull Ladies Club.

She said: "Running is easy to do – you don't need any equipment.

"It's social and some of the new ladies have said they can't believe how much more confident they are now they can run.

"They start off wondering how they can run for two minutes and then they're finishing a 10km race."

Also among the runners was Katherine Felgate, a personal trainer at Wolds Way gym, in Driffield.

She said: "This was my second race of the year but I'm doing two more; the Mucky Duck run at Driffield and the Humber Bridge Half Marathon.

"This was a nice warm-up to that.

"I'm a personal trainer so I'm trying to lead by example. It's better to have something you can aspire to and aim for, like a race, rather than it being just about weight loss."

Beverley Athletics Club itself fielded a number of competitors.

It was a special race for group member Oliver Johnston, who is recovering from a car accident.

The 10km competition was his first timed challenge in about 19 months.

He said: "I hadn't really done any proper training for it.

"It was the first event back after my injury.

"When I was doing weight training and rehab work it gave me something to aim towards."

The race was won by Phillip Tedd, of Sale Harriers in a time of 32 minutes 43 seconds.

East Hull Harriers' Steve Bateson was second, clocking 33.04.

Helen Cross, of Pocklington Road Runners, was quickest female, with a time of 38.11.
