Hull City reporter Philip Buckingham picks his top 10 goals of the 2012-13 promotion season.1 ... Sone Aluko v Bristol City (A)October 27, 2012
The opening goal of Hull City's 2-1 win at Ashton Gate was truly majestic.
Requiring a win to climb back into the Championship's top six, sumptuous interplay between Sone Aluko and Jay Simpson carved open the Robins' defence live on the Sky television cameras.
A one-two became a three-four and allowed Aluko time and space to lift in a confident finish. On a ground that had not delivered a City win since 1965, it was a breath-taking endorsement of the Tigers' new style.
2 ... Nick Proschwitz v Leyton Orient (A)January 15, 2013 Hull City's big-money signing endured a difficult first year in English football, but a flash of his quality came in the FA Cup third round replay at Leyton Orient. With his back to goal and collecting a short pass to feet, a flick and a powerful volley on the turn from inside the box stunned the League One side. City needed an injury-time winner from Tom Cairney to book a fourth round tie with Barnsley but it was all about Proschwitz's brilliant finish that night at Brisbane Road.
3 ... George Boyd v Huddersfield Town (A)March 30, 2013 A game that won't live long in the memory but a winner that certainly will. Few chances had come for either side in front of the television cameras but the deadlock was broken early in the second half in devastating style. Once Jay Simpson had sensed a lightning break, a glorious through-ball was only bettered by the first-time shot from George Boyd high into the top corner.
4 ... Corry Evans v Leeds United (H)December 29, 2012 The Tigers were at their cocksure best when dismantling Leeds United over the Christmas period and the opening goal was poetry in motion. Although Leeds had somehow held firm, their resolve was finally drained six minutes after the break. A flowing team move ended with Robert Koren feeding Corry Evans and, once the midfielder steadied himself, the low finish past Paddy Kenny was perfect.
5 ... Paul McShane v Cardiff City (H)May 4, 2013 Undoubtedly the ugliest goal to make the top 10 this season, but responsible for celebrations like no other goal. With City requiring a final day win to book promotion to the Premier League, Paul McShane's close-range strike from Robbie Brady's corner gave the Tigers a crucial 2-1 lead. Nicky Maynard's late penalty denied McShane the glory but for one moment in time, it was the closest thing to Dean Windass' Wembley winner.
6 ... Jay Simpson v Wolves (H)November 6, 2012 If marks were based entirely on the audacity of the strike, Jay Simpson's wonderful effort to help beat Wolves 2-1 would take some beating. Robert Koren's heavy through ball sent the striker wide of the Wolves goal but that refused to put him off. Assessing his own angles and the position of goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, Simpson defied all logic from close to the byline to score in off the post. It needed to be seen to be believed.
7 ... Sone Aluko v Blackpool (H)October 2, 2012 A contest high on entertainment was lit up by the fierce right foot of Sone Aluko late in the first half. Picking up possession on the Tigers' left, he drove at the Blackpool defence with purpose and unleashed a fine drive into the top corner from 20 yards out. That goal made it 1-1 but Blackpool would keep pressing and emerge with a dramatic 3-2 victory late on.
8 ... Robert Koren v Cardiff City (A)November 10, 2012 In the end it was only a consolation but a last-minute strike from Robert Koren was almost worth the journey to South Wales alone. Latching on to a loose ball on the edge of the Cardiff box, the Slovenian controlled the ball on his instep before looping a sweet volley over goalkeeper David Marshall. The Tigers had lost out to a side that led the Championship but the technique shown by Koren oozed the quality needed to win promotion.
9 ... Stephen Quinn v Burnley (A)March 11, 2013 Steve Bruce took a tactical gamble by introducing Robert Koren and Jay Simpson in search of inspiration in a dour contest and it worked almost instantly. Koren's cross was laid off by Simpson and though Stephen Quinn was left with plenty of work to do, he showed terrific technique to let the ball roll across his path before a left-foot shot into the bottom corner. The one and only goal of the game lifted City back up to second in the Championship.
10 ... Robert Koren v Leeds United (A)September 18, 2012 City had waited almost 25 years to win at Elland Road and the goal that sealed the long-awaited victory was as stylish as they come. With Leeds pushing for an equaliser with City leading 2-1, a lightning break was launched by Corry Evans. A pass out wide to Ahmed Elmohamady had support charging on and Robert Koren's desire brought him just reward and an unassailable lead.Have you seen our new sport section?Bookmark hulldailymail.co.uk/sport for the very best and exclusive local content.
