AFTER 21 years together, they tied the knot in a surprise ceremony on a significant date.
Colin Proll decided to organise a civil ceremony after a noon slot became available on December 12, 2012 – without his partner Gerald Fox knowing anything about it.
The couple, from west Hull, had always talked about registering their partnership but never got round to it.
Gerald, who works as an actor, had been watching reality TV show Don't Tell The Bride the day before and little did he know Colin was planning his own surprise.
"I thought I was going to a friend's renewal of vows but found a letter saying there was a suit ready for me and a taxi booked," Gerald, 45, said.
"I was a bit tearful but really happy.
"I met Colin while I was at university in London. He was working in a bar and back then gay unions weren't recognised by law.
"We both love and support each other very much and we don't often argue, which is why our relationship has lasted."
The 12/12/12 ceremony was booked only recently when the date and time surprisingly became available following a cancellation.
Colin, 42, said: "Gerald could have just not turned up or be working that day but, thankfully, it all went smoothly.
"I was made redundant from Comet recently but this has definitely lifted my spirits and it's been a wonderful day.
"I put a lot of thought into it and family and friends even read out poems as part of the ceremony.
"Although it was always going to be a special day, I thought it would be nice to have it on a special date."
Gerald's mother, Glenys Fox, was among the guests to see the couple tie the knot and could not hold back the tears.
She said: "I have always supported their relationship and the ceremony has been a long time coming.
"I was sure Gerald would be happy about it when he found out and they make a lovely couple.
"We thought they may do it in the new year but now it's all happened in time for Christmas."
There had been a lot of interest in the special date and in Hull, there were eight other ceremonies at The Guildhall and a wedding at The Deep.
Jillian Fill, superintendent registrar for Hull, said: "This is a unique date that will make it extra special for the couples who have had ceremonies and Colin and Gerald's story is special.
"We are currently in the process changing the ceremonies available to those registering a civil partnership and Colin had even used the opportunity to script his own ceremony."
