PROMOTION to the Premier League could be worth as much as £100m to the local economy.
Top-flight football for Hull City next season will bring with it multi-million pound TV revenue and "parachute payments", designed to bridge the gap between the Championship and the top division.
The new media rights deals for next season are yet to be announced, so Dr Michael Nolan, senior lecturer in economics at the Hull University Business School, admits it is a difficult figure to predict.
"You look at the amounts of money earned from being in the Premier League and it is tens of millions of pounds difference to that of being in the Championship," he said.
"Then there is usually a multiplier – as well as the direct effect, there are indirect effects, such as for suppliers, and induced effects, with people having more ability to spend.
"You start off with a ballpark figure and a Premier League club should get £40m to £50m. More money and more jobs are created.
You might be talking something like £100m to the local economy, although some money will flow outside the local area."
Dr Nolan said promotion would provide a timely boost to the region's economy.
"In the past five or six years, times have been really tough," he said.
"The Premier League is a global brand and it gives Hull visibility it would struggle to buy in any other way.
"You look to the past spell when Hull City were in the Premier League and, yes, it did make a difference to the way Hull was perceived.
"The team gave the local area visibility and momentum it wouldn't have had previously.
"This has the chance to be a potential catalyst to improve the area in moving forward."
St Stephen's shopping centre manager and chairman of Hull Bid, Jim Harris, said: "Hull has a great sporting prowess and having successful clubs is one of the things that so many cities are judged on.
"We all remember the days when we were there last time.
"It brings a lot of business to the city. Travelling fans stay in our hotels, drink in our pubs, shop in our shops – so the whole of Hull will benefit.
