Steve Bruce will be without captain Robert Koren in his Hull City starting XI after the veteran playmaker failed to prove his fitness this week.

Koren has been absent with a calf strain for the last two games and though he may be handed a place on the bench, Bruce says a start would be too much of a gamble given the high stakes of today's clash with Cardiff.

With Egyptian striker Gedo also absent, potentially requiring surgery on his troublesome foot injury, it means City must choose from George Boyd, Matty Fryatt, Jay Simpson and Nick Proschwitz to deliver the much-needed attacking edge.

Fryatt's apparent lack of sharpness in his two comeback games may leave the door open for Simpson to provide a greater physical presence.

Bruce is willing to give the majority of the side beaten 2-0 at Barnsley another chance as the Tigers chase the victory that would seal their ascent into the Premier League.

Both Jack Hobbs (knee) and Alex Bruce (Achilles) will be included in the squad, but it is unlikely a back three of James Chester, Abdoulaye Faye and Paul McShane will be altered as the Tigers bid to provide strong foundations.

Malky Mackay has vowed to field his strongest possible side as Cardiff bid to end a title-winning season on a high.

Although promotion was sewn up with three games to spare, the Bluebirds are refusing to rest the players until their Championship duties are done.

That means a full-strength line-up, but Mackay is likely to be without both Craig Bellamy and Matt Connolly after collecting injuries this week.

Although former Premier League star Bellamy is adequately replaced by Craig Noone, scorer of a fine free-kick against Bolton last weekend, the absence of Connolly is likely to mean a rare start for rookie Ben Nugent.

The 19-year-old has been a regular on the Cardiff bench and could line up alongside Ben Turner in central defence, with Mark Hudson already ruled out until pre-season.

Cardiff have no such problems in their attacking ranks and will be able to welcome back both Fraizer Campbell and Nicky Maynard.

Maynard, who has missed most of the season, can only hope for a place on the bench, but Campbell could yet be handed a start after a six-game lay-off with a knee injury.
