AN EAST Yorkshire father is fighting for his life in hospital after allegedly being attacked on a night out to celebrate his 50th birthday.
Ian Brodie, who was marking the milestone in Scarborough, suffered serious head injuries Saturday evening.
The owner of The Cobblers shop in Chapel Street, Bridlington, was last night in a critical condition in Hull Royal Infirmary.
Ryan Tranmer, 22, of Bridlington, has been charged with grievous bodily harm without intent.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared at Scarborough Magistrates' Court on Monday and has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on May 8.
Police officers from Scarborough were called to the scene of a large disturbance outside a bar in the town at around 11pm on Saturday.
Acting Detective Chief Inspector Paul Sweeting, of North Yorkshire Police, said they are appealing for witnesses.
"This incident has unfortunately left a man in hospital in a critical condition," he said.
"It is believed he sustained his injuries during a disturbance outside Scholar's Bar, in Somerset Terrace.
"It was a busy night, with a lot of people around who may well have witnessed what happened.
"A number of people have already provided information about the incident to the police.
"However, I believe there may be people who have not yet come forward who potentially have information which could be vital to the investigation.
"If you did witness the incident and have yet to speak to the police, I urge you to get in touch as soon as you can."
Somerset Terrace was closed to vehicles and pedestrians between the junctions of York Place and Vernon Road for the majority of the day on the Sunday as police carried out investigations into what had happened.
