A FATHER murdered his son and then confessed to the crime after dialling 999 for help.

Stephen Hall, 52, stabbed his son Keith McGlone to death with a kitchen knife in the home they shared in west Hull.

Hall has pleaded guilty at Hull Crown Court to murdering his son on January 21 by stabbing him three times in the abdomen and chest.

Hall telephoned 999 and confessed to the murder. While the police operator kept him on the line, police and paramedics rushed to the house in Catherine Grove, off Anlaby Road.

Despite attempts to save his life, Mr McGlone, 26, died from his injuries and was pronounced dead by a doctor at Hull Royal Infirmary.

Detective Chief Inspector Alistair McFarlane, senior investigating officer, said: "This is a tragic event, which has led to the needless death of a young man.

"The family are not only having to cope with the loss of Keith in such violent and unnecessary manner but also with the fact that it was at the hands of his father."

Hall has been remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced shortly.

Prosecutor Mark Kendall had told the court both men had been drinking and a row had broken out between them before Hall picked up the knife to stab his son.

Mr Kendall said: "The defendant dialled the emergency services himself and told them he had stabbed his son.

"He was in the bathroom and remained there until the emergency services arrived. His son was dead at the scene."

The court heard that Hall had been on anti-depressants for 18 years.

The Honorary Recorder of Hull and East Riding, Judge Michael Mettyear, told Mr Hall he was remanding him in custody until sentencing for murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence.

Mr McGlone, himself a father of two, was known as "Shorty" to his friends.

One friend, Karen Stewart, 52, told the Mail after his death: "I have known Shorty his whole life. Everyone who knew him is devastated by what has happened.

"He was a devoted dad. He loved his two kids.

"Shorty had his problems but he was trying to turn his life around and get settled."

Mrs Stewart said she knew Mr McGlone from when both families used to live on the city's Greatfield estate in east Hull.

Mr McGlone's mother Jude is no longer with his father and has remarried.

"I know Shorty loved his mum dearly and Jude loved her sons to bits," said Mrs Stewart.

"She is just devastated."

Jayne Bolder, 24, of east Hull, is the mother of one of Mr McGlone's children.

She previously told the Mail: "We were together for about a year and a half.

"Keith loved playing on the PlayStation and watching wrestling. He cared for his son a lot. He was always happy and a really nice person who cared about other people.

"I was devastated when I heard what had happened."
