THERE is pressure everywhere at this stage of the season, surrounded by ifs and buts with every result.
I'm still very confident City can get over the finish line and return to the Premier League, but the key to finishing the job off is to stick together as a unit.
Steve Bruce will know what to say and do in the remaining days of the season. He is a quality manager and a class act who has been here before.
The good thing about the Barnsley game is that it's away from home and the pressure is eased a little as a result.
Sometimes it's difficult in front of your own supporters, as we saw against Bristol City last Friday night when they drew 0-0.
It's so important for City to grind their way through the first 20 minutes at Barnsley and take it from there.
We know they have the skills in the team to get the result they need. They are a good side and they need to do the simple things right and carry on doing what they have been doing well all season long.
There has been pressure on City all season and the players have coped with it superbly. If they can cope for another two matches, they will be back in the Premier League.
The one thing I would like to see is a bit more nastiness in midfield, even though they have got to where they are in the table by playing good football.
For the next two games, every 50-50 tackle and even the 40-60 tackles have to be won, wherever they may be on the pitch.
The midfield is always crucial and games are won and lost there. It's not just about winning the first ball, it's also about being able to win the second ball too.
Luckily for Bruce, he has several options for his midfield to ensure that battle is won by his side. Stephen Quinn has a bit of bite in his game and Tom Cairney isn't afraid to put his foot in either.
Defender James Chester also has a big role to play between now and the end of the season.
He reminds me of Michael Turner in the season we won promotion in that he is solid and reliable.
The strikers have their role to play too and have to be consistent also. Now is not the time to be up one week and down the next. Steady players will see City over the finish line and that could see Paul McShane play a part as he always gives his all.
Promotion will come down to whether City are patient enough. They don't have to rush things and think they have to win 3-0 or 4-0.
Results will take care of themselves if they are patient and the players stick together.
They have dealt with what has been thrown at them all season long and I see no reason why they can't continue to in the final two games.
There will be times when Barnsley or Cardiff will be on top against City, and this is where the fans have an important role to play.
The players don't need to hear the frustration coming from the stands. They need to hear the cheers and support that will get them through the tough times.
For the next 180 minutes, City fans should be singing their hearts out to make sure we see the likes of Manchester United back playing league games at the KC Stadium.
The supporters have to suck the ball into the goal and not panic if things aren't going to plan.
These are the games players want to play in and I really wish I was playing at times like this. But we all have to grow old eventually.
