Tom Lineham's hat-trick wasn't enough for Hull FC as the hosts went down 28-20 to Wigan at the KC Stadium. Hull gave their best performance of the season matching Wigan in tries scored, but a series of missed conversions and two late penalties for Pat Richards proved the difference as the Black and Whites' four-game winning run was ended. Wigan raced out to an early 12 point lead thanks to a moment of controversy and a sublime piece of skill, both involving Sam Tomkins. It was the Wigan full-back's forward pass which broke the deadlock and put Iain Thornley in for the first try of the game. Then straight from kick-off Tomkins chased down Richards' superbly weighted kick behind the Hull defence after Richards had initially broken the line and raced down the wing. Hull's response had the home crowd cheering in full voice as their right side came up with two big plays before the break. Tom Lineham scooted over from short range to open the scoring for Hull, then on the stroke of half-time Ben Crooks took a short pass from Danny Houghton, with Joe Westerman's conversion meaning Wigan led by two points at the break. The difference between the sides was evident when on the back of a dubious penalty, Wigan marched into Hull's half for the first time since the break and duly returned back up field with their third try. In a carbon copy of the first half, Hull fans were voicing their displeasure at the decision to award the try after Josh Charnley looked to be in touch, and while they were doing so Sam Tomkins then raced free for his second of the game. The quick-fire double put Wigan 14 points clear, but that lead was short lived when Crooks out jumped Richards to tip on Richard Horne's kick into the waiting hands of Lineham for his second try. Westerman's second failed conversion attempt dampened the comeback, but only momentarily as Lineham pounced again to take Crooks' searching pass out wide for his hat-trick try and the lead was just four points for Wigan. A Richards penalty increased the gap again and when the winger was handed another penalty with 10 minutes to go he slotted it over to seal victory.
