Fire crews tackled a huge blaze at an electricity substation north of Cottingham this afternoon.
The fire broke out at the Creyke Beck station, between Cottingham and the A1079 near Dunswell.
An orange ball of flames could be seen at one end of the station and a cloud of black smoke towered over the site for several hours. It was visible across much of Hull and as far away as Grimsby.
Six fire engines attended the scene and police officers surrounded parts of the perimeter of the site.
Badgers Wood Road, Cottingham, was closed at the junction with Park Lane.
National Grid confirmed there were no injuries and electricity supplies to local homes and businesses were not affected.
Residents in the areas affected by smoke were advised to remain indoors and to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.
Some residents who lived nearby had to leave their homes.
A fire service spokesman said shortly after 7pm this evening that the fire had been put out.
He said: "The fire at the Creyke Beck electricity substation near Cottingham is now out, but the fire service remains at the scene dealing with the incident.
"Those residents who were unable to remain in their homes during the incident are now able to return."
Engines attended from Calvert Lane, Clough Road, central Hull, Bransholme and Brough.
Humberside Assistant Chief Constable Stewart Donald said no injuries had been reported to police.
A spokesman for Northern Power Grid, which shares the site with the National Grid, said the Creyke Beck substation fire did not involve any of the company's assets at the site.
Reports suggested an amount of oil was on fire.
Traffic in the surrounding area was severely congested this afternoon and drivers were advised to avoid the area.
East Yorkshire Motor Services said only one school bus had been affected by the fire.
The Dunswell School bus had to be re-routed slightly, but no other Cottingham or Beverley bus journeys were affected.
Thomas Petch was at Cottingham Parks driving range, which is near to the station, when the fire broke out.
He said: "A huge plume of smoke shot up. It seemed to be an explosion."
Andy Corbett, who took pictures of the fire from by the side of the A1079, said a tower of smoke could be seen from Beverley.
He said: "I saw it as soon as I pulled on to the slip road for the A1079.
"It looked big even from that distance.
"There were no problems on the road at that time. The smoke seemed to be going quite high."Updated at 8pm.
