A CAR PARK is being planned for the site of Trinity House School to help stem the decline of shoppers to Whitefriargate.

Hull Trinity House Charity trustees, which owns the land, says they have to "arrest the decline" of visitors to Whitefriargate, Trinity Market and the surrounding areas.

They say the 65-space short-stay car park, which would sit just behind the historic street, would also compete with the free parking at Tesco St Stephen's.

The existing school building will be demolished under the plans.

Richard East, secretary of the Hull Trinity House Charity Trustees, said: "The trustees of the Hull Trinity House Charity have always been extremely aware of the need to look forward and investigate ways of improving and enhancing the Posterngate, Trinity House Lane, Whitefriargate and Princes Dock Street area and the need to protect this ancient part of the city."

The school is relocating to George Street and doub- ling in size from September.

Mr East said: "It is important to understand that only the existing school building is affected.

"This building has been criticised for a number of years by inspectors and is essentially unfit for purpose."

The building was part-built in 1843, expanded in the 1920s, 1950s and 1970s and is not listed.

The charity trustees say to try to lift the Whitefriargate area, parking is essential.

Mr East said: "The Hull Trinity House Charity trustees have to attempt to arrest the declining numbers of people visiting shops in the Whitefriargate, Trinity Market and surrounding area and also the demand for office accommodation and to try to stimulate some possible residential use of these properties

"The small, enclosed short- stay car park of about 65 spaces will hopefully attract visitor numbers and compete, in a limited way, with the Tesco St Stephen's free car parking facilities."

Mr East said car parking has been identified as a priority need for that area.

He said: "The enclosed area can be made available for occasional specialised use, such as festival activities and heritage activities, when the car park will be closed.

"The possible use of neighbouring buildings is being actively investigated with a view to enhancing the heritage and cultural aspect of this area."

Yesterday, the Mail revealed Whitefriargate has been dealt a major blow with the news WHSmith is closing.
