A MAN who blinded his disabled wife has confessed to sexually assaulting seven children in a nursery.

But despite convicted sex offender Robert Clark's confession, he is not due to face prosecution for the offences.

Clark was jailed for 11 years and labelled a "danger" after he pushed a cigarette into Susan Meakin-Clark's only working eye.

It followed months of domestic violence. Clark, 40, admitted he had wanted to kill her because he could not cope with looking after her.

He was previously jailed in 2006 for sexually assault and given a four-year extended prison sentence.

On his arrest for the latest offence, he told detectives he had also sexually assaulted seven children aged three to four while he was on a placement in a nursery.

He was studying social care at Hull College at the time.

Detectives have investigated the allegations and believe it is not in the public interest to take the matter further.

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: "The police did investigate possible earlier offences and liaised with the Crown Prosecution Service throughout.

"In each case it was deemed either that there was insufficient evidence or it was not in the public interest to pursue the inquiry any further.

"As part of that decision-making process, one of the main considerations given must always be for victims and their continued wellbeing."

It is not clear if the victims are aware they have been assaulted.

Clark had been caring for Ms Meakin-Clark, who is 3ft and wheelchair-bound with disabilities.

He pushed the cigarette in her eye when she dropped it after he had thrown it to her.

As he did it, Clark shouted: "Can you see it now?"

He blinded her in her other eye three years earlier, it later emerged.

The Honorary Recorder of Hull and the East Riding, Judge Michael Mettyear, has given Clark a 16-year extended sentence after he pleaded guilty at Hull Crown Court to grievous bodily harm.

Clark will have to serve an initial 11 years and complete the remaining five if he reoffends.

Judge Mettyear told Clark: "Your wife is terribly disabled. She was as vulnerable a victim as could be. You were her carer and in a position of trust.

"You breached that trust, not only on this occasion, but it's clear on others as well. She was frightened of you. You have talked about using her as a punch bag and you being capable of killing her."

Following the last attack in November, Clark, of Amy Johnson Court, Hull city centre, took his to hospital, where she was rushed in for emergency surgery. He was caught when suspicious staff confronted him.

Clark told detectives he was like a "volcano" erupting and could have quite easily killed her.
