THEY are usually found wreaking havoc over Gotham City.

But Harley Quinn and The Joker took time out from their busy comic villain lifestyles to tie the knot this weekend.

Ditching the traditional white dress and formal suits, Claire Donnelly and Mark Edwards decided to have a "superheroes and villains" themed wedding.

The wedding party and majority of family and friends dressed up for the ceremony at Hull's Guildhall – with guests ranging from Robin Hood to Superman.

And although he usually tries to scupper their plans in the comic books, Batman – aka the couple's four-year-old son Jayden – acted as best man.

"We thought we'd do something a bit different that would be fun for everyone," said Mark, 27.

"We're both big comic book fans and have seen all the films.

"We didn't really want a serious wedding where we'd look and do the same thing as everyone else."

Claire, 21, of Orchard Park, and Mark, of Greatfield, wed on Saturday.

Claire, a student at the University of Hull, said: "I'm surprised there wasn't a car crash – everyone was turning to stare at us instead of concentrating on their driving.

"We also got a couple of wolf whistles and lots of people were taking pictures.

"It was an amazing day and the weather was great."

The pair met at a friend's party about six years ago.

"I liked him when I first saw him, but I didn't talk to him because I was too nervous," said Claire.

"He got my mobile number off a friend and then we started texting.

"For our first date, we watched one of the Harry Potter films at the cinema.

"We watch a lot of films together and all the superheroes' ones and the games as well."

Mark proposed to Claire at her cousin's wedding.

Keeping with tradition this time, he asked for her family's permission before popping the question.

"I asked her dad for permission and then I went to ask her," said Mark.

"She could tell what I was about to do and she ran off crying to the bathroom.

"It was a 'yes' though."

The superheroes and villains theme began with the wedding invitations and continued at the reception.

The invites had a Batman theme for the night and a Joker theme for the day.

The reception was themed on the characters' colours and on the tables were traffic light lollies with little masks and capes on.

The pair have decided to hold off on a honeymoon and are saving for a big trip to the US with their family in 2015.

Claire said: "When we first told people they were really shocked. But so many of them got really into it and have worked hard planning their costumes."

Another aspect of their wedding which made it unusual is that Mark has taken Claire's surname – breaking from the tradition of the bride taking the groom's name.

Mark said: "There are a lot of kids in my family to keep the Edwards name going, but not in the Donnellys.

"So I decided to keep their name going instead."
