A CHOIR at the University of Hull has caught the attention of one of the country's rising bands and is set to feature on their debut album.

Music student Jack Simmonds contacted Bastille, an alternative quartet from South London, after seeing them perform at a festival earlier this year.

He wanted to use their song Icarus for a concert and asked to arrange a vocal part specifically for the university's Contemporary Choir.

Jack said: "The band said I could do it and then asked if they could hear it afterwards.

"We recorded it just on my mobile phone and sent a rough version.

"They loved it and asked if we could record it properly.

"Now, they have said it will feature on their debut album Bad Blood, which is out in March next year."

Bastille have had praise heaped on them by critics this year.

Some of the band's YouTube videos have been viewed almost a million times.

Jack, 20, created the arrangement in about six hours on his laptop.

He said the choir were "extremely excited" when they were asked to record for the band.

"My composition teacher Mark Slater was really impressed. We performed the song at a recent concert at the university's Middleton Hall," Jack said.

"We received an extra round of applause. Although we did mess up a little bit, nobody stopped awkwardly and the audience could not tell.

"I have done arrangements of pop songs by the likes of Ed Sheeran and Regina Specktor. I am dying to use them but you have to get permission.

"It would be amazing to be featured on other albums in the future and it will hopefully help to build my career as a composer."

Jack said he was glad he went along with a friend to see Bastille live for the first time.

He said: "I went to see them at a last-minute festival in the New Forest in Hampshire.

"When Dan was sound checking, he sang some of the song Icarus and I immediately thought it would be perfect for the Contemporary Choir.

"Bastille are great at harmonising and I was thrilled when they asked to hear the part I had arranged.

"The chorus is so catchy and, although the band are still relatively unknown, they already have a big following in the UK."
